United Medical Selected as a Medicare Shared Savings Program ACO

United Medical Accountable Care Organization (UMACO) has been selected by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services as one of 100 new Medicare Shared Savings Program Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs). As of Jan. 1, UMACO is one of 434 Shared Savings Program ACOs that serve over 7.7 million beneficiaries.

UMACO provides Medicare beneficiaries access to high-quality, coordinated care across the United States. UMACO was established by the largest network of professionals in a group practice arrangement in Delaware. It unites multiple accountable care programs under a common ACO platform comprised of primary care physicians and specialists in New Castle, Kent and Sussex counties. This makes UMACO a true representative of Delaware’s patient population.

UMACO has the highest number of physicians of any ACO in Delaware. Its care network is based on Cerner’s clinically integrated electronic health record (EHR) system, which offers a one-record experience that unites over 180 providers and more than 225,000 patients. Cerner’s EHR enables UMACO physicians to deliver more coordinated, team-based, value-conscious care while they address the care needs of elderly, adult and pediatric members.

“Our goal is to help our affiliated physicians provide the best care possible while maximizing reimbursements and improving the overall financial health of the organizations we serve,” said Kemal Erkan, CEO, UMACO. “Without Cerner’s health care information technology and support, it would have been difficult to become a Medicare Shared Savings ACO.”

Doctors, hospitals and health care providers establish ACOs to collaboratively provide higher-quality coordinated care to patients and help slow the growth of health care costs. ACOs receive a portion of the Medicare savings generated from lower growth in health care costs as long as they also meet standards for high-quality care. Beneficiaries, who receive care from health care providers in ACOs, always have the freedom to choose doctors regardless of whether they are affiliated with the ACO.
